To visit war memorials and remember the Canadian Soldiers who lost their lives in battles like Vimy Ridge. 

This TB is a replacement or proxy for Merle Mercedes who has been missing for 4 years. If you find Merle, please take out of circulation.

About This Item

A Legion Poppy

 

2017 is the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, a famous battle involving Canadian soldiers in world war I. It seems fitting to send a poppy on a journey. The attached "poppy" pin was one of my father's collection of Royal Canadian Legion pins. 

Here is Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae's poem, written in 1915 about World War I. 

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
