About This Item

Apollo 14 Crew

In 2009, NASA commissioned Winco International to mint medallions commemorating the Apollo 11 through Apollo 17 lunar expeditions. The twist was that actual metal from one of the command modules that went to the Moon was to be used on these medallions. Each of these medallions actually completed several dozen orbits around the Moon before returning to Earth. This is one of those medallions, minted to commemorate the flight of Apollo 14.

Astronauts Alan Shepard (CMDR), Stuart Roosa (CMP) and Edgar Mitchell (LMP) flew the Apollo 14 mission aboard the CSM Kitty Hawk and LM Antares. They launched from Kennedy Space Center's launchpad 39-A on January 31, 1971 and were the first mission to return to the Moon after the Apollo 13 incident. Shepard and Mitchell performed 2 moonwalks totaling nine hours 22 minutes of the 35 hours and 45 minutes spent on the surface while Roosa stayed in orbit aboard Kitty Hawk. The mission lasted just over 9 days and was completed on February 9, 1971 when Kitty Hawk successfully splashed down on the Pacific Ocean at coordinates S 27°1′ W 172°39′. Antares' descent module is located at coordinates S 3.64530° W 17.47136° in the Fra Mauro formation (the proposed lunar landing site for Apollo 13) while the ascent module crashed onto the surface of the Moon at coordinates S 3.42° W 19.67°. Kitty Hawk currently resides at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
