The Northern Abalone shellfish is well known for its beautiful iridescent shells which are commonly inlayed in jewellery or art. The shells are also distinctive for their row of holes along the edge of the shell which the snail uses for respiration and reproduction. Abalone live in kelp forests on the exposed coast of western North America. Abalone are herbivores. Abalone harvesting is not permitted in Canada though traditionally they were harvested by First Nations on the coast as part of their diet and for their beautiful shells. Abalone are prey to sea otters. Abalone are currently being farmed for scientific research and reintroduction to the wild to bolster the existing populations.
