Betty Joseph was born in 1917 in Edgbaston (United Kingdom), to an English family with Jewish roots. The family of her father were jewellers who originated in Alsace, and who settled in England in the XVIIIth century. Her father and brother were electrical engineers.
Betty Joseph attended high school in Wolverhampton and when her family moved to Birmingham, she began her social work studies at the University and earned her degree in the early 1940s.
She worked first as a social worker and then discovered psychoanalysis after being analysed by Michael Balint. Following the advice of Balint she then trained in psychoanalysis in London with the British Psychoanalytical Society, of which she became a member in 1949.
