The City of Spokane's Park and Recreation Department's 1909 Looff Carrousel proudly celebrated its Centennial in 2009. This magnificent carrousel has been in the City of Spokane since it first began operation which is significant for both the city and this carrousel. The 54 horses, 1 giraffe, 1 tiger and 2 chariot benches are all original and have woven themselves into the fabric of our community. With over 300,000 riders a year, the carrousel is undoubtedly the most popular attraction in Spokane.

Charles Looff, a master craftsman, created the Carrousel as a wedding gift for his daughter Emma. On July 18, 1909, Riverfront Park's cherished Looff Carrousel began operation in Natatorium Park, an amusement park on the bank of the Spokane River on the west side of Spokane. After entertaining many generations of children and families, “The Nat” closed its doors for good in 1967 and the Carrousel was put in storage. In the early 1970s a plan was discussed to bring the Carrousel out of storage to display it during Expo 74, but, concerned that the crowds could damage the hand-carved Carrousel, it remained in storage for one more year and made its debut in Riverfront Park in 1975 in a building that had been constructed for Expo. Fortunately for the City's residents and visitors alike, the Carrousel has remained in Spokane all these years and, to date, all of the Carrousel's original figures are still making their rounds, and they look as good (or maybe even better) today as they did in 1909.

The Carrousel has a self guided walking tour available during hours of operation.

The world’s largest Radio Flyer wagon “The Childhood Express” sits in Spokane’s Riverfront Park. It was commissioned by the Junior League of Spokane for the State centennial Celebration of Children in 1989. The plaque reads: “This Sculpture is dedicated to Spokane’s children, as a reflection of the past, created in the present, to last into the future.”

Designed by local artist Ken Spiering, the Red Wagon weighs 26 tons and is made of steel and reinforced concrete. This mammoth wagon is designed to support the weight of up to 300 people (100 pounds per square foot). It took Spiering a full year of 17 hour days to complete the sculpture.

On any given day children and adults alike enjoy the slide. The Spokane wagon has been voted by USA Today as the top roadside attraction in Washington.

The Numerica Skyride offers the best, upfront views of the Spokane Falls that run through downtown Spokane, Washington (state). It traves past yhe art deco City Hall, then gradually drops down 200 feet over the Huntington Park Natural Area. From there, it continues across the Spokane River in front of one set of falls, under the historic Monroe Street bridge and return to Riverfront Park. The views are breathtaking.

This is one of the rest-stops my grandparents use to stop at back in the 1950s. While they were in the bar (times were different in then), my mother and her older brother would run across the street to an old roadside attraction called 'The Snake Pit'. Although the building is still there, the snake pit is not. Mom said it was literally a snake pit inside. The picture attached here is what the El Patio looks like now.

Lincoln's 50,000 SIlver Dollar Bar is located on Interstate 90 in Haugan, MT

There's a motel, RV park, convenience store, casino, fuel stop, restaurant and gift shop.

The most interesting historical aspect are the family names, historical figures, and details of the coins themselves.

The bar was first owned by the Lincoln family 60 miles to the East near Alberton, MT and has recently been managed by a member of the family.

The original coin was placed by Gerry and Marie Lincoln at their bar in the 1950's and it became a local tradition to add coins.

In 1952, punching silver dollars into the bar was a way for the Lincoln's to promote their bar and it was popular due to that being the most common form of payment in Montana at the time.

The bar was originally called Cherry Springs Bar and did not see many tourists before the interstate came through the area.

The bar has changed from 2,000 to 6,000 to 8,000 to 10,000 and now 50,000 as significant amounts of coins have been added over the years to make a collection and record the number since 1953.

The bar moved to Haugan, MT in 1956 and slowly became a tourist destination as traffic used Interstate 90.

The oldest coin is an 1876 Liberty and more than 10,000 are real silver dollars that were last minted in 1935. All the antique dollars are Morgan or Peace dollars, and the more modern version is the Eisenhower dollar minted in the 1970's.

The most recent number was 81,947 and the bar adds 2,000 annually on average.
