Famous Mathematicians #4: Rene Descartes
Each semester my students complete a “History of Mathematics” project. Through these projects we have learned about some pretty interesting mathematicians. This coin is in honor of Rene Descartes, whose work gave us the cartesian coordinate system that we use in graphing and he applied algebra to geometry. While in school his health was poor and he was granted permission to remain in bed until 11 o'clock in the morning, a custom he maintained until the year of his death.
This coin would like to travel to his native land of France and along the way visit caches that require you to solve a mathematical problem to find the cache whenever possible.
