About This Item

Karak is one of five travellers (others are: Bilby Ninu, Koolah Koala, Screeching Sammy, and Wandering Wally) aiming to see the world. Karak is a South Eastern red tailed black cockatoo, and was the official mascot of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. The name “Karak” is derived from the sound a Black cockatoo makes. Karak is a threatened Australian bird that is found in south western Victoria and south eastern South Australia. This cockatoo is a highly specialised feeder, eating the seeds of only three tree species, being the Brown Stringybark and Desert Stringybark, supplemented with seeds of Buloke. The red tailed cockatoo regularly travels and roosts in flocks. For nesting, the cockatoos require large hollows in old living or dead eucalypts. They mate for life, with the breeding pair usually only nesting once per year. Population size is limited due to ongoing reduction in Buloke which grows on soils that were amongst the first to be converted to farmland; fires which reduce seed availability; loss of large eucalypt trees with hollows; and the brush tail possum being a natural predator.
