About This Item

The USS Peto is one of 28 submarines manufactured during WWII in Manitowoc, WI. This Travel Bug was launched from Manitowoc along with 27 others as a tribute to the builders and crews of those submarines. The Travel Bugs are intended to honor these heroic people who labored and fought to bring peace to the world in 1945.

I thought that Ely, MN was a good place to drop this bug for 3 reasons. 1. This is part of a multi-cache in which 2 of the stops are WWII Memorials to the people who served from this town. 2. From 1940-45 achieved a national record for sending more men (1600 men into the US Armed Forces, about 1/4 of the town's population), per capita than any other city in the USA. 3. Appropriate to the submarine theme- the mines from NE Minnesota supplied the majority of the iron ore needed for the war effort- including the building of subs.

Little bit of confusion with this bug. The tracking number and the card both are associated with USS Peto. Yet if you look closely at the ship itself, USS Cobia is imprinted. At some point the USS Peto must have gotten separated from this particular tag. Teaches one to be flexible and nimble.
