Current Goal

This travel bug has a two-part mission. First, we would like it to be placed in a cache near Dumfries, Scotland. Second, we would like it to be placed in a cache in Silver City, Idaho. Please send pictures of the bug's journey, especially of Dumfries. I've never seen the land of my roots.

About This Item

TB_IDaho.jpg

My great-great grandmother, Katherine Pryor Pierce was born in Dumfries Scotland. At the age of 18, she left Scotland and sailed to America, landing in New York. She then sailed around the horn of South America to San Francisco, where she married John Bradford Pierce. John and Katherine were genuine Idaho pioneers, being among the residents when Idaho became a state in 1890. They mined in both Idaho City and Silver City before settling on a farm in the Boise valley.

The passengers were motor industry traders from the Isle of Man, travelling to the Exide Battery factory at Clifton Junction.

We are off to Scotland at the beginning of April for a short break – we will overshoot Dumfries but the bug will be dropped in the Highlands.

Sorry for keeping this a little while but hopefully you are a few miles nearer Scotland. This cache seemed an interesting one to add to your journey. Have a look at http://www.bolton.org.uk/winterhill.html and read the 2 sections about the Scotchman's Stump - a sad connection for you! Happy onward journey.

  • Up the hill This is the journey to the mast and the cache - phew!
  • At the cache Looking back at the mast just before going in the box - it's 1015feet hight so I couldn't get it all in!
  • To Scotland On a clear day you can almost see the Scottish border - too misty today but if you look really hard...

We had had a break from caching for almost 6 months (it's been very strange) but time has been against us of late. A New Year so we thought we would get ourselves back "in the saddle". Spotted some caches that were not too far away and noticed this one that had your TB so we made plans to get it moving in 2008. I see things have gone a bit slow since comeing over from Ireland (and from the famous Europe' First cache - we did this last year, great place!). Hopefully things will pick up steam as you head further north to Cumbria and then onwards to Scotland.

  • The view from Boulderdash I cannot believe that you have not had one photo of your journey so here is one to set the scene.

Amazingly I was in Idaho a few weeks ago journeying west from the Grand Teton to Mount Rainier - great memories. Picked this one up on a day trip across the Irish Sea from Wales to Ireland. Will take home to northern England and try and get it on it's way to Dumfries. I wish it well.
