About This Item

Bus

A good friend of mine will spend hours reminiscing and talking about old school buses. She would love to hear stories about your trips and experiances on the great old yellow bus. Picures of buses would be nice the older the better. (Remember Frankenstein was supposed to be beautiful)

Picked up today from Remembering Mennon. Had discovered this Bus at our Pre Christmas Party back in Nov. so figured would pick up and move on somewhere in near future--when can find a cache big enough to put it in.

Hi Koso:
I discoverd this nice shinny looking school bus at a recent early Christmas pot-luck for geocachers.
Here is a bit about my last year of school;
I moved from our place, out in the bush to my uncles, so that I could catch the school bus that took me into town, so I could attend grade 11. They didn't teach grade 11 correspondence in the country schools.
The neighbours kids got on the bus first, at 6:30 in the morning. The lad was in grade one, the same as my cousin was. The bus never got home until about 6:00p.M. No wonder those six year old kids fell asleep on the thing.
The roads were from no good to none existant, and when winter came a lot of the trail was off the road, across fields, and down through the bush. As I was the oldest boy, it was my job to open and close all the gates. Also whenever
the bus got stuck (Often) it waS MY DUTY TO RUN TO THE NEAREST FARM TO GET A TRACTOR, OR SOMRTIMES IT WAS A TEAM OF HORSES TO PUll the bus out. Often it would be 40* below.
It was an eighteen passenger bus, but by the time we were within ten miles of town we had thirty six kids on the bus.And there were many more tales I could tell about incidents with the bus.
This was a nice side trip into memory lane. Now I best move on, as I have many more artifacts to "Discover" I'm home alone, with no-one to distract me, so if I get at it I might get done before dawn. Thanks for the aside indulgence.

I have lots of memories of the school bus days.

I spent my childhood living on a farm. The bus trip to school was about 15 minutes. My stop was one of the last stops on the way to school, which was nice because I loved sleeping in. The bus trip home took longer, because my stop was one of the last ones. But that was ok because I enjoyed the bus ride.

Country roads are sure bumpy and with the high cost of bus tires, "Roni" the bus driver never put winter tires on the bus. Many a time the back end of the bus ended up sliding in the ditch. I recall one time in particular (I was about 15 yrs old) where the bus was sitting half-way in the ditch stuck in the snow. The girls stayed in the warm bus while the older boys went outside to help dig out the bus. Us girls thought it was cool that we could stand at an angle in the aisle of the bus.

Every spring each kid in the bus would donate 50 cents towards a year-end gift for "Roni". When it was my year to choose and buy the gift with the money, my mom and I got him a hat and matching shirt with "Roni" in black letters on it. I don't think he ever wore the shirt or hat.

I have two sons who ride the bus to school every day. But we live in the city. They love taking the bus.

Good luck in your journey, School Bus! Make sure you put them winter tires on as there's some snow on the ground now.
