One on the fascinating things about Lon Chaney, and why he was so successful in silent films is that both his parents were deaf mutes, so he learned early in life the skill of pantomime in order to communicate with them -this gave him an amazing ability to interact and express complex emotions on screen that was highly believable to audiences.
