In Haverhill, Massachusetts; USA, the Conservation Commission was initially chaired by my junior high school earth science teacher extraordinaire of 40 years ago, Bob Anton. The memory of Bob lives on as he paved the way for ecological watershed, wildlife habitat, and historical land purchases and championed cleanup of one of the ten dirtiest rivers in our country that flows through the middle of our city. The Conservation Commission works with the City Public Works Department, has special grant programs with several of our public schools, has volunteers from youth groups, and volunteer citizens groups of Haverhill Bright Side Committee, Haverhill Lakes Alliance, and Haverhill Trails Committee maintaining the purchased and granted conservation lands of 1,200 acres.
