This is a Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) with the cover taken off. I removed the metal cover over the top of the drive so that you can see the internal components. This HDD is actually rotating media. The platters you see inside spin at upwards of 4200 revoltions per minute (depending on the platter density) and can have a capacity of up to 5 GB. The arm moves from side to side accessing different parts of the platter while reading the data stored or writing new data on these metal platters.
