About This Item

HU16E

My buddy Hikeaday served 30 years in the USCG and flew many of hours and miles in the HU16E amphibious aircraft.  He flew in them from and maintained them at numerous Coast Air Stations including; CGAS Port Angeles, Washington,  CGAS Annette Island, Alaska,  CGAS San Franscisco, Calif., CGAS Cape Cod, Mass.,  CGAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, and  CGAS Brooklyn, NY.

The Grumman HU-16 Albatross is a large twin engine amphibious flying boat that was utilized by the U.S. Coast Guard, primarily as a search and rescue aircraft.  It carried a crew of four normally.  Flew at about 125 miles an hour with a range of around 2,850 miles.  Doing the math, that's about 23 hours flight time.

Between 1941 and 1961 466 Grumman HU-16 Albatross aircraft were produced.  Their first appearance in the Coast Guard was in the early 1950's and the last flight of a Coast Guard HU-16E was at Cape Cod in March of 1983.  For much more detailed information, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_HU-16_Albatross

Grab It (Not from a Cache) 9/11/2012 Wee Willy grabbed it   Visit Log

This travel bug started off as Superman in April 2005. Didn't last too long and was grabbed by a cacher that decided to keep it in Sept of 2005 after visiting 5 caches and traveling about 500 miles. A copy of the tag was attached to a Crocks shoe and released into the wilds in Jan of 2010. Between the two versions of the TB, it traveled 6748.7 miles and visited 16 caches before it went missing again. I'm releasing it again as this USCG HU16E TB with the hopes that each cacher that finds it will log it and place it in another cache and log that too. Good luck little guy.
