About This Item

HU16E

My buddy Hikeaday served 30 years in the USCG and flew many of hours and miles in the HU16E amphibious aircraft.  He flew in them from and maintained them at numerous Coast Air Stations including; CGAS Port Angeles, Washington,  CGAS Annette Island, Alaska,  CGAS San Franscisco, Calif., CGAS Cape Cod, Mass.,  CGAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, and  CGAS Brooklyn, NY.

The Grumman HU-16 Albatross is a large twin engine amphibious flying boat that was utilized by the U.S. Coast Guard, primarily as a search and rescue aircraft.  It carried a crew of four normally.  Flew at about 125 miles an hour with a range of around 2,850 miles.  Doing the math, that's about 23 hours flight time.

Between 1941 and 1961 466 Grumman HU-16 Albatross aircraft were produced.  Their first appearance in the Coast Guard was in the early 1950's and the last flight of a Coast Guard HU-16E was at Cape Cod in March of 1983.  For much more detailed information, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_HU-16_Albatross

I thought this travel bug looked familiar. I had found this in Arlington about 3 months ago, and placed in Ft. Worth near the tall buildings. We'll I am in Eagle River, AK visiting my brother and low and behold grabbed this out of a cache about a mile from his house. Talk about weird. The funny thing is there are no tall buildings in Eagle River, it is a little mountain town. Maybe I'll try to take it down to Anchorage and take some pics of it near the tall buildings. Then I'll try to decide where for it to go next.
