About This Item

Minnesota State Parks
Geocaching History Challenge

In 2008 the state of Minnesota turned 150 years old! And in honor of this anniversary the Minnesota State Parks has organized a statewide Geocaching History Challenge. With 72 state parks there is plenty to keep you busy hunting for caches and moving travel bugs across the state, not to mention the great hikes, photo-worthy views and untouched landscapes you can find along the way to each cache.

Each of Minnesota’s 72 state parks has a special Geocaching History Challenge cache. Inside each cache are collectable park history trading cards and, if you’re lucky, a Minnesota Sesquicentennial medallion.

You can even earn a special silver medallion when you locate all of the state park caches in a region. A total of four regional medallions can be earned.

For those true geocachers who find all 72 Minnesota State Park caches – they can earn a really special gold medallion!

For more information on the Minnesota State Park Geocaching History Challenge visit www.mnstateparks.info.

The Minnesota State Park Geocaching History Challenge will run through December 31, 2008 – so start geocaching!!

D's brother lives in Fergus Falls so we borrowed his Harley Road King for the day to do some geocaching. It was a bit rainy and chilly today but even a cold, wet day on a Harley is better than the best day at work! This was a fun park to visit. We loved the new picnic shelter and the memorials set up there. We support our troops and appreciate the sacrifices they and their families have made to keep the US safe!

We especially liked the hike which gave us a great cardio workout and took us to a different part of the park than the Hiking Club Trail did. Left a signature poncho and took memories of a wonderful spot. We even saw a woodchuck that quickly ran into the woods when we came around a bend in the trail.

Placed this little guy in the Lake Carlos cache so it could get credit for the visit. We had a nice time at Lake Carlos State Park. We had camped here in May 2003 and at that time enjoyed relaxing by the lake and discovering all the CCC buildings. Today, as we crossed the road there was a cicada laying on the side of the road as if it had been hit by a car. We picked it up to look at it a bit closer and suddenly it started "buzzing" and flew off into the woods after doing a few loop-d-loops!

Just a FYI... we are heading out to the NW region state parks in a couple of days and will be taking this TB along with us. It may be over two weeks before we get back to our computer to log its travels so please be patient with us. We will keep this little guy safe and sound while he is with us.

Retrieve It from a Cache 8/17/2008 dlgps retrieved it from Savanna Portage State Park History Challenge Minnesota   Visit Log

The Myre-Big Island State Park TB visited Savanna Portage with us today. We hiked along a trail that brought us to a wonderful overlook with a beautiful view of Wolf Lake and the surrounding forest below us. The informational signs told us about the Continental Divide that is located in this park. The Continental Divide marks the great division of water: water to the west flows into the Mississippi River; water to the east runs into Lake Superior.

We had meant to leave this TB in the Savanna Portage cache so that someone else could have a turn at moving it around the state. But when we got back to the truck we found that we had forgot to leave it in the cache. Since we needed to get on the road for the 200+ mile trip home we didn't have the time to hike back to the cache and leave it. We will be heading out on a two week trip to find the NW MN State Park geocaches just after Labor Day. If we don't drop it off in a state park near our home before that we will take it along to some more parks. Sorry about being forgetful!

We all enjoyed seeing and photographing the beautiful lakes and views in the Cuyuna Country SRA. It was neat to see the campground full of people that had come to dive in the deep man-made lakes in the area.
