About This Item

Canadian Loonie / Huard canadien

[English] The Great Northern Diver (Gavia immer), better known as the Common Loon in North America, breeds in Canada, northern mainland United States as well as Alaska, Greenland, Iceland and in the far north of Scotland. The species winters over a much wider range in North America, the British Isles and continental Europe. The loon is well-known for its shrill and melancholic cry that can be heard at great distances over still waters. This Travel Bug carries the Canadian 1-dollar coin, introduced in 1987 to replace the paper 1-dollar currency – the coin bears the image of the Common Loon and hence is popularly referred to as the "Loonie" when being traded with other currencies.
