A goal for Doug Bug is to travel back to the Douglas-fir region of western Washington/Oregon/No. Calif.--also British Columbia--and then to visit caches all up and down this region.
Doug Bug is named after the mighty Douglas-fir for which the scientific name is Pseudotsuga menziesii. Pseudotsuga means false hemlock and Doug-firs are not true firs either. Three other species of Douglas-fir are found in Formosa, Japan and southwestern China. Doug-firs can grow to over 300 feet tall and over 10 feet in diameter. The largest diameter I measured was about 11 feet for a Doug-fir growing in the Oregon Coast Range east of Coos Bay... Doug-fir cones are 3-4 inches long, have trident bracts and are pendent rather than growing upright as do true fir cones. Douglas-fir is the most important lumber tree in west North America, especially for structural lumber and timbers.
Doug Bug consists of two small plastic green trees attached to the Travel Bug tag.
