Journey around the world to visit, learn about, and be photographed with as many of the world’s lighthouses before returning home to Pemaquid, Maine.
The Back Shore Bug has set out to travel the world in search of all his kindred lighthouses in the hopes that some day he’ll grow up to be as magnificent as they are. He wants to visit as many lighthouses as he can find, collecting stories, histories and photographs along the way. He started his his journey on the coast of Maine at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse.
The Back Shore Bug began The Pemaquid Point lighthouse is one of the most popular lighthouses in Maine. Originally built in 1827 by order of President John Quincy Adams, the lighthouse marks the entrance to Muscongus Bay. The current tower, built in 1835, is made of stone and is 38 feet tall. The lamp is a fourth order Fresnel Lens installed in 1856, and flashes a white light every six seconds. The light is visible for 14 nautical miles. Pemaquid light was automated in 1934, the first in Maine to be automated. Shortly thereafter the surrounding area became Lighthouse Park, and the keeper’s house became the Fisherman’s Museum. In May 2003 Pemaquid Point Lighthouse made history by being the first lighthouse to ever be featured on US currency.

This bug appears to be missing as we found the cache "Simcoe County Forest #3 - Cookstown Tract" and there were no travel bugs there. Too bad we would have taken it to the east coast (Cape Breton)!

Poor Back Shore sitting so close to a lighthouse but not able to see it. Needless to say I invited him to jump aboard as I was going to visit the haunted Gibraltar Light House. We stuck around long enough to take a pic and read about the skeleton that was found ...

Needless to say I did not want Back Shore to be keeping house too close to the ghosts so I brought him back home with me. I will see if I can find another lighthouse for him to visit shortly.

Gibraltar Point Lighthouse is nearby. It was a rainy and cold day and we could not get Back Shore Bug any closer. But I am sure some local cacher will take him!
