Lucy the Elephant is an architectural marvel built by real estate developer James V. Lafferty in 1881 as a means to attract prospective buyers to Margate, an area just south of Atlantic City, NJ. Lucy stands six stories tall and weighs 90 tons. Visitors climb up a staircase located in one of Lucy's legs to get to the inner rooms and from there they can look through her eyes towards the Atlantic Ocean or go up to the canopy lookout tower on her back.
