To crawl from cache to cache, visiting Philadelphia (where "The Gold Bug" was first published), Boston, New York City, Baltimore and Charleston (South Carolina), all homes of author Edgar Allan Poe; Sullivan's Island (South Carolina), Gardiner's Island (New York), the Thimble Islands, Charles Island, Oak Island, Plum Island and any other island purportedly frequented by pirates, privateers or buccaneers way back in the day. While out geocaching with me, my finder may possibly even discover Captain Kidd's lost treasure cache. Just don't let yourself get bitten by The Gold Bug...
"The Gold Bug" is a short story of mystery and the macabre by author Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1843. Written in the classic Poe style, the story relates the strange series of events following the discovery of a mysterious gold scarabaeus (beetle) by the seemingly delusional protagonist. The story also includes the man's faithful and long-suffering servant, his apparently all-too-rational friend (the narrator), and involves ciphers and cryptography and a legendary hidden pirate treasure cache.
The Gold Bug Slug consists of a golden scarab beetle tack pin with a trackable Travel Slug, registered at Geocaching.com. If you can move it along on its way, please do so; otherwise, please leave it for someone else to move along. The Gold Bug Slug is small enough to be worn on one's attire, but please keep the Bug and Slug fastened together.
Uploads of photos taken during The Gold Bug Slug's journeys are encouraged and appreciated.
