To travel to many caches in all of the 50 United States, and then beyond. (Please mark off states in the enclosed list as they are visited.) We'd love to have you post photos with this travel bug along your travels. Do not keep. This is not a collectable.
Created by Girl Scout troop 7809 from Sageville, Iowa, this travel bug features a medallion commemorating Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA, and the Girl Scout Promise. Each troop member has also attached an animal character bead with their name to the travel bug chain.
Juliette Gordon Low, from Savannah, Georgia, founded the Girl Scouts soon after meeting the founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, Sir Robert Baden-Powell, in England in 1911. Upon returning to the U.S., Low telephoned a cousin, saying, “I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight!”
On March 12, 1912, Juliette Low registered the first 18 American Girl Guides, bringing together girls of all backgrounds into the out-of-doors to develop self-reliance and resourcefulness. Girls prepared for traditional homemaking, but also roles as professional women pursuing active citizenship. Herself deaf, Low encouraged girls with disabilities at a time when they were excluded from many other activities.
Now 3.7 million members strong, Girl Scouts of the USA is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls.
The Girl Scout Promise: On my honor, I will try to do my duty to God and country, to help other people at all times, and to obey the Girl Scout laws.
