Travel back to Regina, Saskatchewan to trade places with it's counterpart.
The first of two coins activated in January 2010. One will be in circulation, and the other will stay in our personal collection. It would like to trade places travelling with it's counterpart occasionally, so hopefully it will return to Saskatchewan once in a while.
Since we moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in 2009, we thought it would be great to send out this coin as a tribute to our new home province. The featured western red lily was named Saskatchewan's floral emblem in 1941, and in 1969 it was put on Saskatchewan's official flag.
Here are a few other fun facts we've discovered:
-
Regina was originally called “Pile of Bones” because of the huge piles of bones left in the area by First Nations hunters, the community was renamed Regina (Latin for Queen) after Queen Victoria who was the monarch at the time. It has been the "Queen City" ever since.
-
Regina is the home of the RCMP Training Academy.
-
Regina is the 8th sunniest city in Canada.
-
Regina has more than 350,000 hand-planted trees.
-
Saskatchewan grows half of the entire quantity of Canada’s major export crops: wheat, oats, barley, rye, flaxseed and canola.
-
Saskatchewan is currently the largest uranium producing region in the world and accounts for about 30% of annual world uranium production.
-
Saskatchewan has over 100,000 lakes, rivers and streams.
-
And most importantly, Saskatchewan has over 3,600 Geocaches to discover!

Mini road trip with MyDogIndy out to Brandon. This was her 300th find - and the biggest tree I've ever seen. Long live the Halfway Tree (planted in 1880). Just over a month until the coin makes its way home to Regina! :)
