About This Item

German Geocoin (Silber)

This Silber Edition German geocoin is named after the autobiography ("The First and Last") of Generalleutnant Adolf Galland, a brilliant fighter pilot who shot down many British aircraft based in Essex airfields like North Weald during WWII.

During the Battle of Britain, Adolf Galland led Gruppe III of Jagdgeschwader 26 "Schlageter" flying Germany's best fighter plane the ME109. He scored his 40th victory on 24 September 1940. By 1945 he notched up over 100 kills and survived being shot down 4 times.

He was not popular with his Luftwaffe Commander in Chief Hermann Goering whom he frequently argued with. Goering, irritated by the Luftwaffe's inability to clinch victory, asked the young ace sarcastically what more he needed, to be told, "Herr Reichsmarschall, a squadron of Spitfires!". Galland said later that he preferred his own Messerschmitt 109's but was not prepared to let Goering get away with the jibe.

He was famous for his hospitality to downed Allied pilots throughout the war and became good friends with British fighter pilot aces Douglas Bader and Bob Stanford-Tuck after the war.

The actual German geocoin stays with the owner. This is a replica for placing in the cache in an attempt to discourage those lovely non-muggles who like to "collect" (ie steal) other people's geocoins.

Please do not log this geocoin if you have not gone to the trouble of finding it in a physical cache. No Event caches please. Logs suspected of being virtual swaps will be deleted.

This is not a regular trading item. This geocoin is a travel bug with a mission. If you do not intend to log your visit, please do not take this item. Please try to place it in another cache within a fortnight.
