Scarab would like to visit museum caches, or caches near museums, around the world. This cache celebrates a Valentine's visit to the Boston MFA and the Egyptian Tomb 10A exhibit and the coffin of Djehutynakht. Scarabs are beetles, especially the Scarabaeus sacer worshipped by the ancient Egyptians as an embodiment of the god Khepri.
The story of the discovery of tomb 10A is a great tale, set in desert heat during World War I. The find came only after the fruitless excavation of 15 other burial sites and a succession of setbacks, including a mutiny from local villagers helping with the work and the nearly self-defeating use of some explosives. Coffins, for Egyptians, were elaborate survival and resurrection systems. A sarcophagus served both as protective shell for the mummified body and the deceased’s new home. The striking imagery and patterning on the inside of Djehutynakht’s coffin, make it an early masterpiece of painting. More than 2000 years old the coffin still has gorgeously colored panels showing, " the dusty plumage of a pigeon, the plump roundness of white onions, the fine spotting and swooning necks of freshly killed ducks."
