About This Item

Salamandra

Salamandra salamandra - aka the Fire Salamander - has bright yellow markings to warn predators of its poisonous secretions. One of the 42 species of salamanders, S. salamandra is an amphibian and not a reptile - hence its desire to stay near the water. Salamanders were once believed to live in fire, because of their tendency to nest in stacks of firewood and emerge from the wood when it was burned.

However, Salamandra has been certified non-toxic and mostly harmless. Unlike others of her species, she actually prefers not to get wet. And please do not put her in any fires! Other than that, she's willing to go anywhere there's a geocache.

I picked Salamandra up on a rainy day in the foothills of Altadena. Salamandra was hiding in a plastic bag and remained dry inside. I think she was up there waiting for a stream to form. This is because Salamanders like wet environments for their tadpoles..
