About This Item

ENG: William of Orange (William the Silent) was born in the house of Nassau in the district of Nassau-Dillenburg. He became Prince of Orange in 1544 and proved to be the founder of the House of Orange-Nassau. He was the principal leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish Empire. The result was the 80-year war, which officially ended in an independent Republic of the seven Dutch provinces in 1648. In the Netherlands he is known as the "Father of the Nation" and the Dutch national anthem "Het Wilhelmus" was written in his honor.

On the front of this coin is a copy of the first Dutch coin which was beaten in 1583. It is a portrait of William of Orange and the motto "Deo Vigilate Confidentes" which means: "Guardian, trust in God".

On the back of this coin is one of William's most important written statements: "I can not approve of princes who want to dominate the consciences of their subjects and deprive them of their freedom of belief ".
