Retrieve It from a Cache 2/28/2010 southpawaz retrieved it from Survivor Cache Arizona   Visit Log

It was raining in Phoenix today so I had to change my plans and go 100 km west to where it wasn't. I had a nice quick 16 km hike into this cache and back, and did some benchmarks before and after the hike to fill out the day. The wildflowers are coming out, here are a few photos.

    • Colorful rock face at Survivor cache
    • Brittlebush
    • Desert Lupine

Out for a short hike today (only 11 km :) ) to pick up 10 caches including an FTF and an STF. We came to this spot where Squaw Creek runs through a canyon for a short ways and had to rock hop back and forth across the creek several times to make my way along.

Today we went to the annual Yuma Event, which brings people together from all over the West. Many people from the north come south and stay in their motor homes in this area for the winter, so there were lots of people from all over the country. I got a very cool gift from ShadowAce, picture to come soon.

The desert is getting really green after all the rain. Flowers will be coming soon. Notice the ocotillos (brown two weeks ago) are covered with leaves now. This was a tough climb at the end but it was a great cache to get.

    • Green ocotillos
    • Lots of green, flowers soon!
    • Castle Dome from the North The final ascent is from the "finger" on the left
    • Castle Dome Summit Register The ammo can here is for a log for all peak climbers to sign, it is set in concrete and has been there for more than 20 years.

Here we are on Montana Peak, located above the ghost town Ruby. Mexico is just over 7 km away in this photo.

    • Montana Peak view to Mexico
    • Montana Peak view from the "beach" This sandy area is the tailings pile (what's left after mining) from the mine at Ruby.
