Raggedy Ann Hits the Road

I am sure I look familiar to most of you - I am Raggedy Ann. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was born on September 7, 1915. My popularity was unparalleled at the time. I have always tried to do the right thing, and have a little fun along the way. Whether playing make-believe, tumbling down stairs, or allowing a bird to use my hair to build a nest, I put forth the values and beliefs that my creator, John Barton “Johnny” Gruelle, held dear – kindness, generosity, cooperation, friendship and love. It has been said that I am sweet to the very core – I even bear an “I Love You” heart on my chest.

Raggedy Andy, my brother, came to be in the 1920’s. Unlike me, Raggedy Andy is mischievous, adventurous, although also lovable. At first I thought my adventures became even more wonderful than before with my younger brother in tow. It got old fast! I began to read magazines Kickin’ had around the house. Shape Up, Muscle Girl, Karate, and I thought where are the pantaloons and the aprons on these gals? I see page after page of Levis pants and tank tops. How about the different hair colors and makeup because – “I’m worth it”! Needless to say, I mentioned to Raggedy Andy that I might take a trip and that didn’t go over. He said Kickin’ would have a fit as she like me the way I am but hey, do I stop her from her Karate class…..so…..the Jeep was there, the cats left the pet door ajar and it was like a sign…..I am outta here! I want to see Okinawa, San Francisco, and what about the Knickerboker; I want to go to ……..hey, if it’ll keep Kickin’ from trackin’ me down, I even want to climb a mountain – I am woman, hear me roar!!!!
