About This Item

AWA-My 25th

This button comes from one of my old AWA jackets, imprinted with the original America West Airlines logo. The airline hired me in September 1986. A brief history: The airline started business on August 1, 1983 using three leased Boeing 737 aircraft flying out of its base in Phoenix, Arizona @ Sky Harbor International Airport; headquartered in Tempe, AZ with Ed Beauvais as CEO and Mike Conway as president. Initially, passengers could buy tickets on board the aircraft. Born during deregulation, America West grew to become the nation's eighth largest airline. From bankruptcy and reorganization to a merger with USAir, the small upstart airline- once dubbed "the best in the West"- tenaciously held to a survivor-like attitude and continues now as US Airways.
