Current Goal

A while back, IGO member Blue Deuce donated a Groundspeak Volunteer Geocoin to the IGO and suggested that it be used as reward for people who put in extra effort for the good of the IGO or geocaching in Iowa.

About This Item

The following are some guidelines that will be used to determine who will be invited to log the coin:

  • People who participate in an IGO sponsored CITO event.
  • The person or people who lead the planning efforts for one of IGOs large annual events. At present, these are Hike N Seek and Cache Bash.
  • People who are very active in organizing, running and improving the IGO. This could include past and present board members and people who donate significant time or resources to the group.
  • People who put in extra effort to get geocaching accepted in a previously off-limits area. This could include folks who give presentations to town councils or park directors.
  • People who actively promote geocaching/IGO by talking to the media, teaching classes and otherwise exposing non-cachers.
  • People who keep geocaching alive and well by placing a higher-than-average number of high-quality caches.

In short, we are looking for people who take the lead in improving geocaching, the image of geocaching, or the relationships geocachers have with others.

Since this is intended to be a reward, only the "best of the best" will be invited. In addition to the high standards, the coin will be awarded no more than 4 times per year. Once a person has been awarded the coin, that person will not be eligible again for a period of one year. We hope that these limits will make logging this coin something special and will challenge people to give more to the geocaching community.

Cachers can be nominated at any time by sending an email to "iowageocacherspresident@gmail.com" with a few words about what the nominee has done to earn the coin. Nominations will be considered by the IGO board of directors and possibly other geocachers. Please put "Extra Effort Geocoin Nomination" in the subject line of the email. An invitation to log the coin will be awarded to the nominee who is chosen as having done the most to further the IGO and/or geocaching.

Today at the People's Choice Awards we (MKL8Y & I) were recognized by the Iowa Geocachers Organization board of directors for our volunteer work over the years and the struggles that a pandemic presented when attempting to host Hike-N-Seek and don't forget about the derecho that hit the area hard. This means so much I really don't know what to say. I did have flash backs to all the summer challenges, Hike-N-Seeks, PCAs, the last minute favors I asked with the awards. I love geocaching and the large family that goes with it. I have met so many great people along the way. If we haven't met up and talked stop me and say "HI".

Thank you for the recognition it means so much!

Many thanks to the Iowa Geocachers Organization(IGO) and the 2021 Board of Directors (BOD) for all their efforts in keeping geocaching in our awesome state thriving. I was awarded the IGO Volunteer coin in recognition for my work for IGO as a Board member and the State of Iowa as a Volunteer reviewer this past year (2021). I'm stepping down from the BOD to make room for some fresh new recruits and am always willing to lend a hand.

There's nothing else I would rather spend my free time doing than supporting the Geocaching community. The IGO is blessed with an awesome geocaching family that I'm proud to be part of. I cannot think of a better way to support our friends and family and tip my hat to all of the effort that is put into keeping Iowa Geocaching on the map.
