Travel with me, visit caches, and be discovered.
This coin celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and showcases a few of Scouting’s Treasures: Cub Scouting, Boy Scouts and Venturing. Pass our coins on so others can enjoy logging them and learn about our program.
During the summer of 2010, my Webelos Scout was working on the requirements to earn a Centennial Medal at the BSA Star Spangled Camporee held at Fort McHenry. The requirements weren't difficult and there were options. One of those options was doing something called geocaching. On August 7, 2010 my Scout and I created an account to find out what this thing called geocaching was. Two days later we were in the State Park that borders our neighborhood looking for something - we weren't sure what. There was excitement when we found that first tupperware container in the woods!
My Scout earned his Centennial Medal, but never had a passion for caching. During the first 2 years I found less than 50 caches and was using a car GPS set to walking. It wasn't pretty. We got our first hand held GPS, but had no idea how to load coordinates or put them in manually. We walked around and watched the numbers go up and down to see how close we were. Eventually, by year 3 I started to meet people and was having more fun than being a solitary cacher.
I received and activated this coin on January 24, 2018. The 110th anniversary of the publication of Lord Baden-Powell's book, A Guide for Boys, which started the Scouting movement.
