Fourth find of five found and ten attempted today on our bike ride from Myersdale, PA to Cumberland, MD. Cache was guarded by a black snake with yellow stripes. It was either a garter snake or a ribbon snake. In any case, I tried poking him with a stick thinking he would scurry away, but he got VERY angry with me, coiled up in like an S-shaped spring and sprung at me a couple of times. I used the stick to flick him off 20 feet or so into the distance. TNLN stamped and signed log. TFTC!

Between the previous logs that the contents were soaked and complaints that it was WAY off the posted coordinates, I knew this one needed some owner maintenance. I made up a new cache container and took my boys for a bike ride out to the Trailside Park today. It took me a while to find the cache. I found the remnants of the twisted log that USED to be GZ, but no cache there. I just kept expanding my search and looking in all the likely cache hiding spots, and eventually I found it. There was actually a white-tail deer hanging out near the cache, but it ran away quickly when it saw me.

Replaced with a new, dry, clean cache, fresh log book, a TB, and a bunch of toys (army paratroopers, tanks, jeeps, lizards - stuff my boys picked out). Recorded the new hide coordinates. I let my GPSr sit there and average out for a few minutes, so hopefully these coordinates are pretty good.

My eldest son and I took the boat across the lake to Bear Island again today. This time we parked at the Bear Island Post Office dock and hiked up to the hotel ruins. It's VERY cool that you have a postcard of the original hotel in there. That really made the visit worth while. Picked up the TB that was in the cache and left a few toys to restock the swag. Stamped and signed log, and took photo #8 on the disposable camera (i.e. 7 photos are left).
