“I say the world is ours – if YOU can COUNT.” So said Cyrus, leader of the Riffs, in the 1979 film “The Warriors” which was banned from numerous theaters when it was initially released. The film is modeled after New York City gangs and loosely based on “Anabasis” by the ancient Greek writer Xenophon, which details the journey of 10,000 Greek mercenaries in the army of Cyrus the Younger (that’s where “Cyrus” comes from) as he seeks to overthrow his older brother, the King of Persia Artaxerxes II. They fight Artaxerxes' army at Cunaxa, defeating it, and all seems well -- until they realize that Cyrus had been killed in battle, leaving the Ten Thousand deep in the Persian Empire—whose king they had just fought to overthrow—with few or no friends and a long way to go before they could find anything even remotely resembling safety. There begins the real story, as the Ten Thousand battle the elements, Persian treachery, and their own fears—encountering some interesting people along the way—as they try to make their way back to Greece. Sounds good – CAN YOU DIG IT ? ;-)
The film was intended to infuse the comic book genre, which can be seen in the Director’s Cut version which contains several animated links between scenes. The comic book genre is also why some of the gangs have pretty flamboyant “colors” or outfits. If you have never seen it, we recommend it, although some of the very-choreographed fight scenes may be a bit rough for the young ones. Please move this trackable along, and log where it goes on geocaching.com Thanks ! Maybe it can make it all the way to Coney Island !
