About This Item

Dick Turpin

Dick Turpin was a notorious British highwayman who robbed people in the area of Epping Forest east of London in England. Later in his life, to avoid capture, he moved north where he was arrested for his ungentlemanly attitude after killing a cock. He was then recognised for who he was and convicted for horse thieving and hanged on York Knavesmire on 7th April 1739. Though horse theft carried the death penalty at the time, it was not the normal sentence. It is thought that Dick Turpin was executed for the offence more to avoid the necessity of sending him to London to stand trial for crimes for which he would undoubtedly hang rather than specifically for the horse theft itself. The TB is a horse brass depicting Dick Turpin and his legendary ride from York to London on his horse Black Bess. There is little evidence to support Dick Turpin ever having made this famous ride, the story first appearing in work of fiction. If the ride ever did take place, it is more likely to have been undertaken by another highwayman Quick Nick who is said to have made the ride to successfully establish an alibi for a crime that he had committed elsewhere.

Took Dick from Mary K as we feel we have a bushranging connection as my Grandmother was a cousin to Ned Kelly the famous Australian bushranger.I will take him to visit the country of the Wild Scotsman at Gin Gin near Bundaberg. He was a loacal bushranger in the area and there is now a festival held yearly to commemorate his activity. Will try to get some details to add to this post.If he will fit we will leave him in a cache in the main street of Gin Gin.

Did bring him to Gin Gin and placed him in the cache at the rest area.James Mcpherson was an educated man who turned to crime after a dispute over shearing wages. His speciality was stealing good horses.Actually he was killed as the result of a fall from a horse and is buried in Burketown.

Took Dick to visit the Kenniff tree in Augathella. Notorious bushrangers, the Kenniff brothers, used to tether their horses here for a quick getaway when they came to visit Augathella.

I brought this TB to the NT 5 months ago and it has not moved since it was dropped off after the clean up event we had, so upon finding it was still in the Darwin area I grabbed it and will move it on.
