Current Goal

The original goal was to help the Rapakivi Brothers to the Baltic Sea region. Since Pim has achieved his goal, his current goal it to travel back to the Netherlands to report to his owners about his adventures.

About This Item

The granite Rapakivi Brothers, Pim and Pom, have been around for millions of years. Recently, in the Saalien ice-age (about 150,000 years ago), they left their ancestral home and moved with the ice to the Netherlands. Once the ice melted, the brothers were stuck in the Steenwijker Kamp, in the Dutch province of Overijssel. They were picked up by us, and we decided to present them with a holiday. Or rather, you're going to help Pim or Pom along towards their holiday destination: a cache in their homeland, the Baltic Sea region. Click here for a map.

The Rapakivi brothers have enjoyed each other's company for a long long time, and it is essential that they travel separately from each other. They may end up in the same cache at the holiday destination, but they'd rather not be together in the same cache on the way to avoid confusion or worse.

When Pim and Pom have spent some time in the North, they would like to be taken back to the Netherlands, specifically to the Steenwieker Kaampe cache where they'll report to their owners. After that, a new travel destination will be revealed.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

To our great dismay, Pom seems to have vanished in the Baltic Area. We moved him to the Dutch TB burial ground at Rottumerplaat. His brother Pim will have to continue its journey alone. Since Pim has reached the Baltic Area and visited it extensively, he is now allowed to come home, back to the cache where he has started his big adventure. We therefore ask the next finders to help Pim to travel back to the Netherlands.

PIM

Pim is alleen verder gereisd.

I arrived to Scenic Nuuksio #4 in the evening. Daylight was getting dim, so instead of a search, I had to find spot for my tent. I made dinner, read a book and slept to the morning. On morning, I did one search before breakfast, but that was unsuccessful. After breakfast, I packed things, but wanted to give this cache one last chance before giving up. I only had compass, GPS and TB Pim with me, on this final search. Then I finally found it. Since it has taken me this long to search it, place has lot of rock around it and it has beatiful view to the lake, I decided to leave Pim here to enjoy this view, before its way to home (or visit to Nuuksio national park, which is pretty close to this spot).

Even before I started geocaching, I sometimes wondered, what is that cave in Nuuksio-Luukkaa maps. On this weeked, I was able to visit that spot, log cache and as bonus, find my very first travel bug.

There is a large rapakivi granite boulder some 500 metres west of the cache (true bearing 261º).

The contact of the large Wiborg Rapakivi Massif is some 50 kilometres east. Both the boulder and the TB have probably started their journey from there. Soil derived from rapakivi granite contains fluorine-bearing minerals. Therefore, the fluorine concentration in groundwaters of the rapakivi area is 5 to 10 times higher compared with the mean value of the whole country.
