Okay. Last time. I promise the travel bug is going in a cache today.

    But first...
    That's right...
MORE SKYDIVING! Today's adventure involved another exhibition jump, followed by a few fun jumps at the drop zone.

Joe and I jumped into a car and motorcycle show at the nearby Little Black Creek Water Park. The water park is pretty well covered up with trees, so we decided to land on a little sandy island near the shore of the lake. It was a pretty tight spot, so we had to be accurate on our landings or we'd be swimming. To make it even more difficult, the little island was a playground and had a swing, teeter-totter, volleyball net, etc. on it. On top of that, it was really windy and there were low clouds so we only got 3,000 feet of altitude before jumping. Did we make it? Watch the video to see. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgpK9B6UK08

After that, we headed back to the drop zone for a few fun jumps. First was a 4-way formation dive with some other old-timers that I hadn't seen in years. We did really well and built many different formations in freefall. Next was another 4-way dive, but this time it was a high-speed sit-flying jump. The four of us exited the plane together with our legs linked, then once we got stable we split up and flew relative to each other in a sitting position. Then Adam and I did a skills practice jump. We practiced "burble hops". That's when one jumper hops across the other jumper by flying through the dead air above them; their burble. It's tough to do without crashing down on top of the lower jumper but by the end of the dive we had it down and were doing some really fast, stable burble hops. Finally, I made a jump with Kelly and Kara; the Firefoxes. These two girls are very cute and are just crazy about skydiving. They even have matching dive suits, helmets, and Firefox tatoos. On our jump we launched a 3-way round formation out the door of the plane, then made "doughnut" formations, rounds, and did 360 degree turns between formations.

Another fun and fabulous day of jumping. Now, off to a geocache with you. The cache I'm leaving the TB in gets visited fairly often so hopefully it will be picked up soon. I hope it travels far and wide and has many more adventures on its journey.

    Blue skies!

    • Exiting the Otter over the Black Creek Water Park. Yep, the travel bug and I made another exhibition jump today from 3,000 feet out of the Gold Coast Skydivers' Twin Otter jump plane.
    • Jumping into the Little Black Creek Water Park. This was a fun exhibition jump. The target landing area was the small sandy island near the shore of the lake on the left side of the picture. A bunch of travel bugs and geocoins made the jump with me.
    • Exiting the Otter on the 4-way formation dive.
    • Flying a 4-way round formation on today's jump #2.
    • The beginning of the 4-way sit-flying jump. Jump number three for the day was this fun sit-fly jump. We exited the plane with our legs linked together, then split up and flew near each other in a high-speed sitting position. My freefall computer recorded over 180 mph on this dive.
    • Flying with Kelly and Kara: The Firefoxes. Just a fun little practice jump with two cute girls.

Fishing yesterday, skydiving today. Life is good. I took some travel bugs and geocoins back to the drop zone again to make just one jump -- but a very special jump -- my 1,000th skydive. On the last load of the day, fourteen of us went up with a hula hoop and did a "hoop dive"; one of my favorite fun jumps. Charlie, the pilot, gave us some extra altitude to work with. Two jumpers held the hula hoop in freefall while everyone else lined up in the sky and flew through the hoop one at a time. I was the first one through the hoop. As more jumpers flew through we started building a formation with the people that had gone through. It was a very successful hoop dive, with most of the skydivers making it through the hoop before break-off altitude.

After the last jump of the day was finished a traditional 1,000th jump ceremony was held which included me getting a big pie in the face (hey, it's a skydiving thing). Then Brooke, the drop zone's six year old parachute packer, had a blast washing me down with a hose to get all the pie off. She ended up soaking me completely.

We had several video cameras running during the hoop dive and I put together a compilation video of the jump which you can watch here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRHsnQB8xvc

    • The TBs & GCs that made my 1000th skydive with me. Quite a few travel bugs and geocoins went along on this milestone skydive. It was a blast!
    • Me & the Gold Coast Skydivers that jumped with me. Fourteen of us went up to almost 16,000 feet for a really fun hula hoop dive for my 1,000th skydive. Yeah, I know, there's only thirteen in the picture. JC, the photographer that took the picture, was the 14th jumper.
    • Model Citizen flying through the hula hoop.
    • Other jumpers lined up to go through the hoop.
    • My ceremonial 1,000th jump pie in the face. It's a skydiving tradition. You get a pie in the face after your 100th skydive (you kneel for that pie) and after your 1,000th skydive (you stand for that one).

The Whitetail travel bug got to go on another adventure with me today. Last night, a couple of friends and I drove down to Port Sulpher at the far south end of Louisiana, stayed at a really nice camphouse, cooked some extra thick steaks, then got up early in the morning and headed out into the Mississippi River delta marshlands to fish for speckled trout and redfish. The weather was perfect and it was a great day of fishing and fun. We caught our limit of speckled trout before 10:00am and then spent the rest of the day hunting the more elusive redfish. We almost caught the limit on those too. A few sheepshead and flounder were also part of the day's catch. At one fishing spot there were a couple of porpoises that hung around the boat, swimming circles all around us. Every time we reeled in a fish that was too small and had to be thrown back they were right there to grab it. They didn't chase away the school of specs we were fishing, but just waited around for our scraps. All in all it was a very fun day on the water and the Whitetail travel bug was along for the ride.

The Whitetail travel bug accompanied me on another skydive this evening. We jumped into the Bay Springs Country Club annual golf tournament and crawfish boil at 7:00 pm, right after the golf tournament ended. Luke, another skydiver from the Gold Coast Skydivers drop zone, and I jumped from 5,000 feet and put on a show. I rigged some smoke grenades on a bracket on Luke's foot and he set them off on the way down, while I jumped in with the 50 foot long red, white, and blue streamers I had practiced with earlier today. We both landed on target on the 1st hole fairway right as the crawfish were served. We hung around for a long time stuffing ourselves with crawfish, potatoes, and corn. It was a great event!

Here's a link to the video of the jump I put together from my helmet camera and a camcorder on the ground. Enjoy!

The Whitetail travel bug and some others got to participate in a few adrenaline-charged adventures with me today.

Can deer fly? You wouldn't think so, but today we put it to the test and it turns out this deer can fly pretty well. We loaded up the truck this morning with equipment and headed south to participate in my favorite pasttime -- skydiving. The travel bugs and geocoins made two jumps with me at the Gold Coast Skydivers dropzone in Lumberton, Mississippi. The first jump was a low altitude 5,000 foot) jump to practice flying with some long 50 foot red, white, and blue streamers trailing behind the parachute for an exhibition jump I had coming up later in the day. Jump number two was a high altitude (14,500 foot) jump with a friend at the dropzone. We exited the plane together and practiced "sit-flying". This is when you fall / fly in a sitting position. It's much harder to do and you fall much faster than when you're falling belly to earth. Vertical speed can reach 180 mph.

Now the Whitetail travel bug has tasted flight and knows why the birds sing. If you want to check out the videos from my helmet camera, I've posted them on YouTube. Here are the links:

    • Whitetail and others getting ready to skydive! Here's the Whitetail travel bug and some other TBs and geocoins laid out on my skydiving rig before the first jump of the day. It was so much fun we did it a couple more times today.
    • Skydiving travel bugs.
    • The view from 14,000 feet right before jumping. Yep, this is what it looks like right before jumping out of a perfectly good airplane at 14,000 feet. The Whitetail TB got to experience this several times while it was with me.
    • Exiting the Otter with Ed. Ed and I did a high speed sit-fly jump. We exited the plane in a 'train' formation, with me behind Ed, holding onto him with my feet.
    • Having fun in freefalll with Ed.
    • The view under canopy at 2,000 feet. It's really beautiful and peaceful floating around over the dropzone under canopy. The Whitetail travel bug was right there with me.
    • Gold Coast Skydivers - Lumberton, Mississippi. Feel free to visit any weekend with good weather. You can see all the parachutes in the sky, maybe make a jump yourself, or take a ride up in the plane and watch all the idiots jump out.
