Tens of millions of years ago, lived an ancient race of beings. They were the first evolution of humans. They split into two factions of people, the Ori who supported Religion and the Alterans, who supported science. The Alterans left their homeworld and searched for a new home, far away from the Ori, where they could practice science in peace. They developed ships and the Stargate in the Milky Way Galaxy, and set in motion a mission to populate the Universe with their own kind and their network of Stargates. Over 50 million years ago, they launched the unmanned Gate Seeder ships, designed to Gather resources, data, manufacture Stargates and deposit them on habitable worlds. Finally, the Alterans launched Destiny, a massive, unmanned ship designed to follow the path of the Seeder ships and to explore the Stargates left behind. The Alterans planned to use the Stargate's Ninth and Final Chevron to reach the Stargate onboard Destiny once it had ventured far enough out into the Universe. But they never followed up on it.
