Lapu-Lapu is the name of the chieftain of the native Filipinos who is told to have killed the Portuguese captain Ferdinand Magellan in a battle between the natives and the Spanish colonial soldiers on Mactan island in April 27, 1521. Therefore Lapu-Lapu is regarded as the first National hero of the Philippines. Beside this the Filipinos don't take this too serious. A tasty fish living in the sea around Mactan island is also called Lapu-Lapu by the natives. The coin shows Lapu-Lapu on his monument in Lapu-Lapu-City on Mactan Island, Philippines.
