From the New Zealand summer to the Canadian winter! This cache is near where the first big gas/oil discovery was made in Alberta. And not quite 100 years later, we're into the oil sands. This is where I leave the coin. Good luck!

    • Turner Valley, Alberta. 2006 Compass Rose Geocoin and a little history of oil in Alberta.

California is probably not too interesting a place if the geocoin's owner is in California...so I will keep the coin for one more hop. Good bye California.

San Francisco is not an interesting compass point and is not near any interesting geographic "line"...although it IS very near the San Andreas Fault which is certainly another kind of interesting geographic "line"! However, San Francisco (especially, the bay) was a very important "discovery" during the time when North America was being explored...the Spanish arrived in 1769...the natives arrived at least 4000 years earlier. Today, San Francisco is home to a large number of interesting sights that are "discovered" by a large number of tourists every year.

    • San Francisco, California. 2006 Compass Rose Geocoin "discovers" the famous Pier 39 on the Embarcadero at the San Francisco waterfront. Tourists, tourists, tourists (not counting us, of course!).
    • San Francisco, California. 2006 Compass Rose Geocoin and a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. This picture was taken at Coit Tower on Telegragh Hill, very close to the Parrot's Perch cache.

This is not a very busy cache so you can come with me a little further.

2006 Compass Rose made it over both the equator and the date line on the way to Rarotonga from New Zealand. But those are both very hard places to stop at! So 2006 Compass Rose will stop at a place of "discovery"...the Cook Islands. The Cook Islands appear to have been "discovered" by a Spaniard in 1595 and then again in 1606 and eventually by James Cook in 1773. Of course, by far the most important "discovery" was by the original Polynesians who arrived long before in twin-hulled Vakas (canoes).

    • Rarotonga, Cook Islands. One of the many fabulous beaches on Rarotonga. This one is on the southeast part of the island.
    • Rarotonga, Cook Islands. View over Rarotonga towards the north and the town of Avarua. This is the view from the "Needle" (an old volcanic plug) on the "Cross Island" walk.
    • Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The Rarotonga forest...thick and tropical.
