To travel that distance – 4287 miles/ 6898 km
Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) was an Austrian artist, poet, and playwright best known or his intense expressionistic portraits and landscapes. After serving in the Austrian Army in World War I, Kokoschka was wounded and declared mentally unstable by doctors. Nevertheless, he continued to develop his career as an artist, traveling across Europe and painting landscapes.
Together with Munch and Kandinsky, Kokoschka was one of the foreign artists who contributed to the development of 20th century German art. In 1934 his art was deemed degenerate by the Nazi’s, and he fled from Austria to Prague.
The McMaster Museum of Art has five works in the permanent collection by Kokoschka - one illustration in Das Graphische Jahrbuch / The Graphic Yearbook, and four prints.
