About This Item

Celebrating 100 years (Coffs Harbour Advocate)

This Travel Bug is dedicated to Australia's last remaining LETTERPRESS (Hot metal) NEWSPAPER, "The Don Dorrigo Gazette"

The first issue of the 'Don Dorrigo Gazette' was published over one hundred years ago on January 8th 1910 by founders Herb and Roy Vincent.

The Vincent family started newspapers all over the eastern parts of Australia and even in Tasmania, 21 in all.

Some of the newspapers included:

    Richmond River Examiner
    Richmond River Independent
    Armidale Chronical
    Glen Innes Examiner
    Uralla World Times
    Daily Examiner

During the Gazette history despite two world wars and poor financial times the gazette has never missed an issue.

                                                                                      TRIBUTE TO

                                                                                     ALAN SMITH
                                                                                        (SMITHY)

                                                                               4.3.1937 – 5.8.2011

Alan started at the Gazette back in 1958. And in 2006 he came back after retirement to do one day a week to help out after the owner John English was forced into retirement due to illness.

Alan loved the job and acted as a mentor to both Michael (current editor) and to teach Jason (compositor) in this old age world of letterpress printing.

With the passing of Alan it is a tremendous loss of knowledge not only in the art of letterpress printing but also the amount on local knowledge he had learned over his life time.

Alan will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
