This Travel Bugs' mission is to visit Scouts and Scouting events around the world and to encourage all who hold it to support your local Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops. I'd also love to see it travel to Scouting Camps. It started out visiting Camp Butler/Camp Manatoc in Pennisula, Ohio where my son goes to camp and events all throughout the year.
There is a fire blackened brass grommet on the keyring. One of the things that happens at Scout camps is a flag retirement ceremony around the campfire at night for old and worn flags. In our Scout pack, the scouts are asked to retire the stripes portion of the flag and we invite all veterans or current members of the military (or any other service profession) to retire the stars of the flag. This is all done in silence and is a very moving experience. The next morning, the grommets from the retired flags are removed from the ashes and given to the veterans and other participants that earned the right from deeds done during camp. My son earned this grommet last year for helping during the ceremony. The grommet will slowly lose it's blackened color with gentle wear and will become bright brass again.
My son and I would love to see this travel bug move along with Scouts (especially since there is now a GeoCaching Merit Badge). And we'd certainly love to see any pictures of it's travels with scouts along the way.
A Scouting keyring with a Cub Scouts Wolf badge medallion, along with a 100 Years of Scouting Trackable and a fire blackened grommet.
