Piet Heyn Geocoin

The Eighty Years’ War, or Dutch War of independence, (1568–1648) began as a revolt of the Seventeen Provinces against Philip II of Spain, the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands.

After the initial stages Philip II deployed his armies and regained control over most of the rebelling provinces. However, under the leadership of the exiled William of Orange the northern provinces continued their resistance and managed to oust the Spanish armies, and established the republic of the Seven United Netherlands.

The subsequent war between the Spanish empire and the Republic continued, although the heartland of the Republic was no longer threatened. The war ended in 1648 with the Peace of Munster when the Dutch Republic was recognised as an independent country.

Design

The geocoin is round shaped and has a size of 1.75″ (approx. 44 mm). The coin is made after a medal commemorating of Admiral Piet Heyn (1578-1629) and his historical capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628 near Matanzas, Cuba. The front of the coins shows the bust of Admiral Piet Heyn in armour, lace ruff and chain. The text ‘PET:PETRI.HEINIVS.FOED:BELG:ORD:ARCHITHALASS’ means: Piet Pieterson Heyn, Admiral of the United Provinces. On the back side of the geocoin a 3D view of the naval action is shown. The text ‘HEINIAD NVP SENSIT SPOLIATA MATANCA’ means literally: Matanzas, plundered lately, felt the might of the race of Heyn. The 3D view is surrounded by the words ‘Piet Pieterszoon Heyn - Dutch Admiral who found his cache in 1628 in the bay of Matanzas’

Op 26 september was ik gezellig op het Geocoinfest Europe 2015 in de Netherlands. Ik was die zaterdag ochtend vrijwilliger, ik gaf iedereen zijn/haar bestellingen waaronder de mooie coins die ter gelegenheid van dit event waren gemaakt. Als vrijwilligster heb ik ook een mooie serie gekregen. Zo heb ik in de middag wat rondgelopen en de vele moois coins bewonderd zowel nieuwe als de verzamelingen.
Zo ook de hele mooie verzameling van Geo-Dragonchild, de een nog mooier dat de ander. Tjee.. dat is een extra hobby erbij dan alleen geocaching, mooi hoor. En nu mag ik ze allemaal discoveren. Thanks..

Auf dem Mega Event in Eindhoven gab es viele tolle und auch außergewöhnliche coins und TBs zu entdecken, die man nicht so häufig sieht. Unter anderem auch diese riiiiiesige Sammlung, die ich bestaunt habe. :O

Hallo Marcel,
wat leuk dat ik je op het GeocoinFest 2015 in Eindhoven heb getroffen en gesproken. En inderdaad wat jammer dat we geen foto hebben gemaakt.
Evengoed hartstikke bedankt dat je de lijst met codes van je geweldige serie coins aan me heb toegestuurd.

Tijdens het Geocoinfest 2015 in Eindhoven heb ik de nederlandse geocoins van Geo Dragonchild bewonderd. Een aantal herkende ik uit mijn eigen verzameling maar er waren ook een aantal voor mij totaal onbekende nederlandse coins bij. Bedankt voor het tonen van je collectie.

Wij hebben Marcel aka Geo-Dragonchild ontmoet tijdens de GeoCoinFest in Eindhoven, waar hij deze indrukwekkende Dutch Geocoin Collectie verzameling hebben mogen aanschouwen en discoveren.
