Piet Heyn Geocoin

The Eighty Years’ War, or Dutch War of independence, (1568–1648) began as a revolt of the Seventeen Provinces against Philip II of Spain, the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands.

After the initial stages Philip II deployed his armies and regained control over most of the rebelling provinces. However, under the leadership of the exiled William of Orange the northern provinces continued their resistance and managed to oust the Spanish armies, and established the republic of the Seven United Netherlands.

The subsequent war between the Spanish empire and the Republic continued, although the heartland of the Republic was no longer threatened. The war ended in 1648 with the Peace of Munster when the Dutch Republic was recognised as an independent country.

Design

The geocoin is round shaped and has a size of 1.75″ (approx. 44 mm). The coin is made after a medal commemorating of Admiral Piet Heyn (1578-1629) and his historical capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628 near Matanzas, Cuba. The front of the coins shows the bust of Admiral Piet Heyn in armour, lace ruff and chain. The text ‘PET:PETRI.HEINIVS.FOED:BELG:ORD:ARCHITHALASS’ means: Piet Pieterson Heyn, Admiral of the United Provinces. On the back side of the geocoin a 3D view of the naval action is shown. The text ‘HEINIAD NVP SENSIT SPOLIATA MATANCA’ means literally: Matanzas, plundered lately, felt the might of the race of Heyn. The 3D view is surrounded by the words ‘Piet Pieterszoon Heyn - Dutch Admiral who found his cache in 1628 in the bay of Matanzas’

Vandaag zijn we aanwezig op het Geocoinfest in Eindhoven. Al eerder waren we op grotere events aanwezig, maar nog niet eerder op een die gericht is op coins.
Vol verbazing hebben we rondgelopen en de mooie aanwezige coins bewonderd. Ook bekenden kwamen we met een verzameling tegen, we hebben even gezellig bij gesproken.
Op de zelfde etage kwamen we ook deze mooie verzameling tegen. Goed beschermd lagen ze aan te glimmen in de kast. Bedankt voor het laten zien van deze mooie collectie!

Discovered at the GeocoinFest in Eindhoven, where we really enjoyed the atmosphere, the people and the superb collections of geocoins. This one was there on display and it was one that we liked the most.

Vandaag afgesproken met Sonnet.B om naar het Geocoinfest 2015 in Eindhoven te gaan. Wat een happening. Een drukte van jewelste met een heleboel kraampjes en een vracht aan diverse Coins om te discoveren, waaronder die van jou Geo-Dragonchild. Het is een mooie verzameling bijelkaar.

Vandaag ben ik op het geocoinfest in Eindhoven geweest en heb daar vol bewondering staan kijken naar deze mooie verzameling Coins. Op locatie zijn enkele foto's gemaakt en vandaar uit werd het me mogelijk gemaakt om een hele serie coins te discoveren.
