When I lived in New York City, I'd occasionally take advantage of a nice summer weekend day by hopping on my bike and catching a ride on the first morning train out to Montauk, 120 miles east. Cruising out to the lighthouse and back was a great warmup for a day out at the beautiful, rural (and -- important for biking -- flat!) far end of Long Island.
