About This Item

Auburn Courthouse

This beautiful Courthouse in Auburn, CA is in the town we live in and we wanted to share it with you.

Built 1894-1898

This is a grandiose three-story Classic Revival structure topped by a bracketed cornice and simple Renaissance Revival inspired dome. Monumental stairs lead to a main second floor from both the north and south. This building is one of four surviving northern and central California courthouses which retain most of their architectural ornamentation and magnificent domes.

Before the formation of Placer County in 1851, this hilltop where the present courthouse now stands was the site of bull and bear fights and public hangings. The County's first courthouse, built of wood and cloth with an adjacent log jail, was erected on Court Street. A new two story wooden courthouse with a bell tower was built on the hill in 1853. The log jail burned in 1855, and in 1857, a new two story brick jail was built to the west of the courthouse on the hill. The two buildings were connected via an iron bridge running from the jail to a second story courtroom.

The Placer County Courthouse you see today was completed in 1898 with most of its building materials coming from Placer County: the granite from Rocklin, the bricks and terra-cotta trim from Lincoln, lime and lumber from various other areas in the county. The slate roof is from El Dorado County. The courthouse bell came around Cape Horn and was used regularly to summon officials to court. This building is listed on The National Register of Historic Places.

15:25 EDT - Well... I'm back! Let's try again to find you a spot that you can catch a ride other than with me. It's back on the I-4 TB Commuter again.

  • A few minutes away from Lake Eola Lake Eola (E-oh-la) is in downtown Orlando. A city park surrounds it. Paddle boats, band shell, art shows, concerts, fireworks, jog/walk trail, benches, picnic. Something happening day & night each weekend.

The roar of traffic is nearby as this “Geo-traveler” facility is adjacent to Interstate-4 in an established central Orlando residential neighborhood bisected by the highway. You have arrived at the Princeton TB Hotel near its namesake street (I-4 exit 85) just north of the downtown business district. Most tourist destinations like Disney and other themed attractions are under an hour’s drive (if traffic is good 🙂) to the southwest. However, the immediate urban area provides the Orlando Science Center, numerous city parks/lakes, and a variety of nightlife and entertainment venues. When in season, pro basketball’s Orlando Magic and arena football’s Orlando Predators play at nearby Amway Center. The Citrus Bowl is a few blocks away and also hosts sporting and musical events as well.

  • Passing by Arabian Nights dinner theater exit This is one of many themed dinner theaters in the "attractions" area west of Orlando. The show is live with horses and costumed actors. These places often encourage guest participation and interaction like a sports venue.
  • Passed by exit for Titanic-The Experience The story of the sinking is legendary; now experience the wonder & tragedy of this ill-fated Ship as a passenger! Travel back in time, where authentic artifacts & interactive storytellers in period costume allow you to relive the unforgettable event.
  • Passing by WonderWorks exit Four US locations feature over 100 interactive exhibits covering space, physics, & math, presented in a fun way. Housed in a themed building designed to look as if it were picked up by severe weather & dropped upside down on an existing building.

Are we there yet? Almost. You are at the closest TB hotel to Disney World’s main entrance… Celebration Travel Bug Hotel. Just travel west on Celebration Blvd. about a mile and you are on World Drive (I-4 exit 62) northbound to experience the many Disney amusement theme parks. Geo-traveler guests will enjoy the lakeside view, as this establishment is located along a Celebration community walking/jogging trail that winds through a traditional Florida habitat in Osceola County. A “Meca” of non-theme park alternative entertainment, dining and shopping abound in nearby Kissimmee along US Route-192 (I-4 exit 64).

  • Visiting Celebration, Florida A town /community initially planned & developed by the Walt Disney Company in the 90s. Has a population near 7,500 & covers nearly 11 square miles. Some see it as a return to small-town values or resembling the too-perfect town of The Stepford Wives.
  • Passing through Osceola County, FL Named for an “Indian” leader Osceola whose name means "Black Drink Cry[Asi Yaholo]." In 1887, Osceola was named a county, having been created from both Orange and Brevard Counties. Numerous tourist spots in Kissimmee along US-192 like Old Town.
  • Passed by Disney's custom utility pole This unique structure is at exit 62 "World Drive" the main entry to Disney World from Interstate-4. Mickey's ears are even lit up after dark! When the kids see this they know Mickey is not far away... no more "are we there yet?"

There is plenty of parking here. Curbside transportation service is available at the Give a Hoot TB Hotel on US Route 98 (I-4 exit 32) on Lakeland’s north side. The immediate vicinity is a hub for local shopping (the mall & numerous plazas) and eating establishments galore. If you are endowed with a “good arm”… you should be able to toss a baseball to the nearby Long Horn steakhouse, Hooters or some vehicles traveling along the interstate (NOT recommended!) You are about halfway between Tampa to the west and Orlando to the northeast.

  • Visiting Lakeland, FL Founded by Abraham Munn, who purchased 80 acres of land in what is now downtown in 1882. Baseball’s Detroit Tigers have been spring training here since 1934. Sun-n-Fun Fly-In & air show each April. Largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings.
  • Traveling on US Route-98 Established in 1933 between Pensacola & Apalachicola, Florida. The current 964-mile route runs from Palm Beach, FL thru Alabama to the Mississippi River in the town of Washington, Mississippi.

06:05 EDT - Ah yes… nothing like the roar of airline jet engines passing by overhead! The Orlando Airport TB Hotel is in line with the runway and just minutes away from its namesake. Catering to the traveler, this interesting nautical themed “Geo-traveler” lodging facility provides 24/7 access, adequate lighted parking, and shall we say… quick & easy guest check in/out. Cache is renowned for TB/GC movement by air in/out of Central Florida. Nearby east west moving “Beach line” highway (Florida state road 528) is a toll road that intersects Interstate-4’s exit 72 about 10-miles to the west and Florida’s east coast beaches. The facility is approximately 10-miles southeast of downtown Orlando and within 30-minutes of most area vacation/tourist destinations.

Good morning and welcome to Florida! You have boarded the Interstate-4 (I-4) TB Commuter/Hotel & Airport Shuttle. I commute along I-4 about 66-miles one-way during the workweek. You can anticipate being checked in at one of the many “Geo-Traveler” lodging facilities (IE: TB hotel, resort or bed & breakfast) along the aforementioned route. Until you are checked in, I'll do my best to assist with any specific mission/goal. When time permits (real life 😉) I endeavor to post photos with a title & some text to each passenger’s web log. • Lodging near Orlando International Airport The 2nd busiest airport in FL, 13th in the US and 29th in the world by passenger traffic. Formerly known as McCoy AFB until closure and all Air Force flight operations ceased in early 1975. You were in a TB hotel nearby that caters to this airport.
  • Visiting Orlando, Florida History dates back to 1838 & the height of the Seminole Wars & was incorporated in 1875. Basketball’s Orlando Magic calls the city home court. Once known solely for cotton, cattle & citrus industries; now a leading worldwide vacation destination.
  • Arriving in Florida Did you know… Florida has the most coastline of any of the contiguous states & the lowest highpoint of any of the states. 663-miles of beaches. In 1565, Spain created the first permanent settlement in St. Augustine. Became the 27th US state in 1845.
  • A Florida art souvenir Between the famously sunny climate, tremendous coastline, world’s largest cruise ship port, and a variety of amusement parks, it is no wonder that tourism is the largest part of the "Sunshine State’s" economy. Alligator is the official state reptile.
