Stenehed is an area of ancient monuments in Bohuslän, Sweden. In addition to a graveyard and a viking stone ship (grave in ship formation) are nine standing stones erected in a long line. Originally, it was eleven or twelve stones.
Among the myths that exist about the place is the best known the one of the meeting between King Rane of Raneborg and Queen Hud. The Queen, impressed by the brave king, had promised him her hand. However when she arrived at Raneborg with her bridal train, the King had changed his mind. In anger she burned down the castle and said about it: "So far you have been called Raneborg but henceforth you shall be called Svarteborg (Black Castle)." The King retaliated by first killing the Queen and her fleeing wedding party at the now historic site Stenehed. The stone row was, according to legend, erected in memory of every killed person of the bridal train.
