Oi Manawa, The Canterbury Earthquake Memorial opened at the sixth anniversary commemoration event on 22 February 2017. The Memorial provides a place to reflect on the day that changed Canterbury forever – paying respect to the 185 people who lost their lives, and to those who were seriously injured. It also acknowledges the shared trauma and support received during the recovery operation

An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 occurred 40km west of Christchurch on Saturday 04:35 am local time, 4 September 2010 at a depth of 10 kilometres with no fatalities. I thought I was gonna die that morning, not long after I found myself in Australia.

It was the beginning that changed Christchurch forever with thousands of aftershocks leading up to the destructive aftershock of magnitude 6.3 of February 22, 2011 at 12:51pm centred just to the north of Lyttelton at a depth of 5 km. Although lower on the moment magnitude scale than the quake of September 2010, the intensity and violence of the ground shaking was measured among the strongest ever recorded globally in an urban area due to the shallowness and proximity of the epicentre. The vertical shaking is estimated to be three times greater than would be expected in a 1 in 500 year earthquake.

One third of buildings in the Central Business District will be demolished. In contrast to the September 2010 quake, the quake struck on a busy weekday afternoon.

The death toll stands at 185 people.
