IlliniKina took it to Mammoth Spring ParkCache

Arkansas

Two Penn State researchers, Stephan Schuster and Webb Miller, used mammoth bones, and later mammoth hair (from a display in a Russian museum) to produce genome sequencing of the extinct animal. This is pretty cool, and hopefully will lead to further understanding of animal extinctions, and even more, preventing them and finding some human uses.
Also, this Arkansas state park is really nice. There's the spring itself which is amazing, and then all the history surrounding the spring and the area. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wished I'd had more time there.

I don't want to spend all day googling, so just going with SEC teams: Penn State has fought the Dawgs (Bulldogs) of UGA (Georgia) twice. Each team has won once, with the last meetup in 2016 going to Georgia. Maybe not man's best friend for the Nittany Lions ;)

Megan McLean is on the golf team and is pretty darn good :) She shot a 67 at one round in her Jr year. The 2019-20 season is her senior year. Good luck, Megan!
Jack McLean was on the rugby team, his Sr. year being 2018-2019. He was a team captain as well. Who knew there were professional rugby teams in the U.S.? McLean was signed onto the Old Glory DC MLR team after graduating from Penn State. Good luck, Jack!

This earthcache was, naturally, about a sinkhole. I currently live in an area of Florida known for sinkholes--heck, the name of the county means "sink". Turns out College Station and the Penn State campus are also on top of karst topography. Since 2012, there have been at least 3 major sinkholes formed in the area. While they were repaired, there was still damage done. Here's hoping there isn't another one any time soon.

This cache was pretty cool, and I enjoyed it immensely. I went looking for an "Arthur" connection to Penn State. I found that there was an All-American fencer named Arthur Urman at Penn State in 2007-2008, though there is no mention of him going pro after graduating ;)
Continuing my search, I came across this article about the secret organization at Penn State called the Order of the Sword. If you are also a fan of the movie "Willow", you will find this as amusing as I did :)

This area, around Ozark, MO, sure loves its water towers :) There are several series of caches based around them. They must have some high quality H20!
Which makes me think of "The Waterboy". From the imdb page for the movie, here is one of their pieces of trivia:
During an interview with ESPN, LaVar Arrington (LB New York Giants) mentioned that in preparation for his role in the movie, Adam Sandler had visited him at Penn State to watch him practice.
======
Arrington played linebacker for Penn State from 1997-1999.

Guardrails...guards...offensive lines...Penn State just hired Phil Trautwein as their offensive line coach :)
I saw that headline and I recognized the name, but couldn't place him until I read the article. Trautwein played for the Gators when they won their 2 National Championships. Glad to see him doing well, but UF could use a little help on O-line too!

Ok, I resisted the urge for the prior cache, but it's just too easy so I'm going there for this one. This cache is in...Miami! (Oklahoma). Another Miami connection ;) I don't actually remember much about the game, but I remember cheering for Penn State (of course) and immediately disliking Vinny Testaverde ;)
Anyway, this was probably my favorite cache on my trip. I enjoy Wherigos, and this one taught me some history of the Barker Gang. It was very interesting.

This cache is on historic Route 66.
Connor McGovern was #66 for the Nittany Lions from 2016-2018. He went into the draft instead of playing his senior year, and it looks like he's been injured the entire time. I hope he heals and has a better Year 2 in the pros.

This cache is a virtual at the point where Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma meet. The old monument is about 30 feet west of the new platform marking the meeting point. I wonder if that caused any major problems when it was updated?
Penn State offers a B.A. in Surveying Engineering :) But it's in Wilkes Barre. I suppose those students can drive in for football games.
